John McCarthy
An early AI researcher associated with Dartmouth, Lisp, and logical knowledge representation.
John McCarthy (1927–2011) helped organize the Dartmouth AI project and developed Lisp and logical approaches to knowledge representation. Nils Nilsson’s John McCarthy: Biographical Memoir documents these contributions.[1]
Making Robots Conscious of Their Mental States examines functional self-knowledge rather than proving machine subjective experience.[2]
Domain expertise and limitations
Some Expert Systems Need Common Sense analyzes how useful narrow expertise can coexist with missing background knowledge and poor recognition of limits.
His 1980 circumscription paper formalizes defeasible reasoning; the article distinguishes that publication from its later author-hosted reprint.
